Toenails – ingrowing, thickened, deformed
During the course of our lives we may experience various problems, particularly as we get older or during sporting activities.
Problems may include ingrown nails, which are extremely painful and often infected lesions, often the result of incorrect cutting, ill-fitting shoes or inherited nail shape irregularities.
Thickening of the nails may be caused by trauma (major or repetitive minor stress on the nail), fungal infections, hereditary or systemic conditions such as psoriasis. Fungal infections of the nails are characterized by thickening and discoloration, and often crumbling and/or separation of the nail.
Correct diagnosis is essential in the treatment of fungal nail conditions.
Trauma of the nail may be due to movement of the foot within a shoe that is too large or loose, or from direct pressure of ill-fitting footwear result in bruising, damage and often loss of the nail. Trauma may also result in permanent deformity of the nail.
