Claw & Hammer Toes

Clawing toes and hammer toes occur when the toes are retracted or drawn into a claw-like position, usually due to a muscle imbalance or arthritis in the toes/foot.
This results in rigid and sometimes painful toes with greatly increased pressure areas on the tops and tips of the toes and balls of the feet, often leading to callouses and corn formation.
Management includes in Children may involve taping of the toes, exercises and footwear advice. For adults, it includes debridement of any lesions, pressure deflection, footwear advice and possibly surgery.
