Cracked Heels & Heel Fissures
Dry, cracked or fissures heels are the result of the skin becoming too dry and often thickened with callous, which reduces its elasticity causing it to split under pressure. It can become quite unsightly as well as painful and occasionally even bleed. The most common causes of cracked heels are walking barefoot or in open footwear such as thongs or sandals, standing for prolonged periods, changes in climate (very hot or cold), increased weight, abnormal walking patterns and dehydration, They may also be the result of systemic conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, diabetes and peripheral vascular disease or some medications such as diuretics or chemotherapy. People who are bed ridden can develop pressure areas in the heels which may become painful and fissure.
At Wanneroo Podiatry Surgery we specialize in treating all aspects of this condition and advising you on how to prevent it from recurring. Treatment usually involves debridement of the thick, fissured skin, footwear and gait assessment and rectifying any underlying issues. The regular use of emollient on the feet, drinking plenty of water and wearing footwear with enclosed heels aids in the treatment and prevention of this condition.
